British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
