Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
