The Global Health Body Issues Concern Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections

Under one in 10 patients that would benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy are able to get them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its first advice on the medications.

With over a billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is calling for increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines recognises that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and continuous treatment," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are significant obstacles to widespread access to the injections that can aid individuals in losing considerable weight, notes the body.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Despite the present most favorable scenario, the production of these medications could only cover about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, per the WHO.

The recommendation urges countries and companies to widen availability, via measures such as voluntary licensing.

A patent on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

These medications mimick a biological compound to slow digestion, reduce hunger and enhance feelings of fullness so users eat less.

People typically start to lose weight in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies indicates people may see weight return within a year of discontinuing the treatment, as their usual appetite resume.

Being above a healthy weight raises your chance for contracting health problems, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
